2006 update:

One of the wonderful features of the Park at Dinosaur Caves is the children's playground conveniently and safely situated at the eastern edge of the park, near the potties and picnic area. A shady pavilion is nearby so parents can keep an eye on their youngsters...enjoying beverages or a snack, or just quietly enjoying the spectacular scenery. Lovely shade trees will also help keep the summer sun from visitors of all ages.

The western edge of the play area is bordered by grass. To the east is the colorful and informative Windows on the Central Coast mural with its depictions of local wildlife.

Construction has begun. Walks have been built. The sandbox has been filled and can be used. Decorative climbable rocks have been added to give a natural beach look and feel. Good size trees have been donated and will be planted soon.

But a major element is still missing.

In keeping with the goal to be educational as well as recreational, the children's sandbox area is designed to contain life size animal figures that kids can meet face to face. Seals, dolphins, even a dinosaur and dino eggs are scheduled tomake their home in the play area. Toddlers and youngsters will be able to climb to their hearts content, protected by sand and rubberized surfaces.

These creatures are a major expense.

It's hard to believe just how much castings can cost. The DCPS needs to raise $114,000 to stock the play area with these charming climbable critters. Donors are invited by to sponsor a critter these charming climbable critters. Groups may buy one. Sponsoring a critter gets you a tile on the donor wall. Donations are tax deductible.

You can even put it on your MC/Visa through our secure PayPal account .

A very special work of art

A unique feature of the Park at Dinosaur Caves is a stunning tile mosaic on the wall between the children's playground and the picnic areas. At 350 feet, it will one of the largest tile murals in California. The people who've seen the first few feet of finished wall say it will be one of the prettiest works of art as well. The Preservation Society and the people who use the park are fortunate to have nationally known tile artist Michael Laboon of Shell Beach giving months of his time, talent and studio to creating and assembling this very special art piece. Michael began his career as a potter three decades ago and for the last twenty years has focussed on his distinctive style of tile panels constructed for home and office. Each tile is made from raw clay and transformed by a techique called wet-cut mosaic which gives a unique stained glass look to his tiles.

The Windows on the Central Coast wall consists of repeated 4 foot panels with a nautical seashell theme. In between each panel is a tile 14in square window giving a glimpse of some facet of flora, fauna, and cultural life of the Central Coast. Each unique tile mosaic Window is custom designed, cut, painted, and hand fired by the artist. The creature featured in each window will be identified, providing a learning experience for park visitors for years to come.

Only 36 custom Windows will be created. To have your name included as a sponsor one of these unique works of art requires a donation to the Dinosaur Preservation Society Donor Wall Fund of $1,000 or more. More than half these Windows have already been sponsored by insiders who fell in love at first sight with Laboon's exquisite craftsmanship. Below is a list of tile windows available for purchase.

Donors may take the rare opportunity to be part of the artistic process, discussing their window with the artist before it is created. Michael then invites donors to visit his Shell Beach studio while your tile is being cut, painted, fired or assembled.

In addition to the exclusive studio tour, each tile donor's name will be permanently placed on a tile band directly below the window sponsored.

Call Marilee Hyman at 773-6777 or mhyman@charter.net to sign up for the window of your choice or for more information about becoming a sponsor.
