Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Where are the dinosaur bones?

There are none. The name comes from a concrete dinosaur built to attract customers to a rock and shell shop located on the property in the 1950's and 60's. More…

Q. What happened to the original dinosaur?

A fire caused damage. Later it was bulldozed down.

Q. Where are the caves?

The caves collapsed in the 1970's. There is no safe access from the park. There is limited access still at low tide by kayak.

Q. Who owns the Park?

The residents of Pismo Beach. It is maintained by the City.

Q. Who is paying to build it?

The park is being developed chiefly through grants and private donations with considerable assistance and support from the City of Pismo Beach. The Dinosaur Caves Preservation Society has a unique cooperative agreement with the City of Pismo Beach to help obtain donations from private individuals and local contractors, the Rotary Club, and others for the benefit of the park. The DCPS assists in obtaining grants from the State by providing matching funds where needed and directly fund projects on the approved Master Plan.

Q. What does it cost to use the park?

This is a free public city park and open for use by families and individuals at no charge. Everyone is encouraged to use it with kites, frisbees, dogs, and picnics. Walk the bluff top trail, play a guitar, or sit quietly and enjoy the plants, wildlife, and fantastic views of the ocean and the Pismo pier from the overlooks.

To keep the costs of caring for the park low, we request everyone remove their trash, including cans and wrappers, dog droppings and cigarette butts before they leave.

Q. Are dogs welcome?

Yes, many dogs use the park every day. Dinosaur Caves Park even provides a special doggy fountain for your furry companions. As on all city property, dogs must be on a leash and owners are required to use mutt mitts to pick up any doggie deposits so children and other park users and gardeners don't step in them.

Q. Are you going to sell beer or wine at events?

Selling or drinking alcohol is forbidden in all city parks and beaches. Exceptions have been granted in the past for a special event like wine tastings on the pier. Each event is an individual case. Inquire to find out whether permission is possible.

Q. What do I do if I want to hold a wedding in the Park?

Depends on the size of the wedding, the number of guests, and whether a reception is involved. You apply to the Parks and Recreation department for a permit. Contact Vicki Davenport at (805)773-7039 or apply on line. Online application

Q. How can I have an event in the park?

It depends on the size and nature of the event.

Small event

If you wish to reserve an overlook or area of the park for a small gathering, a permit with a small fee from the Parks and Recreation Department at the City is required. Contact Vicki Davenport at (805)773-7039 or apply on line. Online application

Large event

Larger special events which will use city services require a separate permit and fee from the City Clerk. A Special Events Committee review may be involved. Online application

Q. Is electricity available?

Limited availability at the amphitheater when completed.

Q. Are there stairs to the ocean?

Stairs are planned for in the future. At present, neighboring Shelter Cove Motel has an access path and a set of public stairs to the north will get you to the beach.

Q. Can we set up a booth at Art in the Park?

That's a question best answered by Shannon Len, the event coordinator. You can reach her at (805) 773-1564 or shannlen@hotmail.com

Q. How can I help build the park?

We need your help to finish the park. Although considerable funds have already been raised for the first phases of the park, more is needed to complete the elegant park design approved by city council.

Every donation counts! Your helping hand would be a lasting gift to your community.
