Dinosaur Caves Park Playground and Amphitheater

Project: Dinosaur Caves Playground

One of the wonderful features of the Park at Dinosaur Caves is the children's playground conveniently and safely situated at the eastern edge of the park, near the potties and picnic area. A shady pavilion is nearby so parents can keep an eye on their youngsters...enjoying beverages or a snack, or just quietly enjoying the spectacular scenery. Lovely shade trees will also help keep the summer sun from visitors of all ages.

The western edge of the play area is bordered by grass. To the east is the colorful and informative Windows on the Central Coast mural with its depictions of local wildlife.

Construction has begun. Walks have been built. The sandbox has been filled and can be used. Decorative climbable rocks have been added to give a natural beach look and feel. Good size trees have been donated and will be planted soon.

But a major element is still missing.

In keeping with the goal to be educational as well as recreational, the children's sandbox area is designed to contain life size animal figures that kids can meet face to face. Seals, dolphins, even a dinosaur and dino eggs are scheduled to make their home in the play area. Toddlers and youngsters will be able to climb to their hearts content, protected by sand and rubberized surfaces.

These creatures are a major expense.

It's hard to believe just how much castings can cost. The DCPS needs to raise $114,000 to stock the play area with these charming climbable critters. Donors are invited by sponsor a critter. Groups may buy one. Sponsoring a critter gets you a tile on the donor wall. Donations are tax deductible.

You can even put it on your MC/Visa through our secure PayPal account .

Project:Rotary Centennial amphitheater

Support the amphitheatre

One of the unique areas of the Park at DC is the outdoor amphitheater consisting of a circular stone stage area surrounded by stepped, grassy rings facing the ocean.

Designed for music, school, and other performances, it will comfortably hold an audience of 150-200 on natural grass seats. This lovely outdoor theater is located near the southern end of the parking lot away from neighbors so classes, concerts, musicals, revivals, weddings, ceremonies and other events can be held without disturbing local residents.

The amphitheater will be wired for sound and has already attracted the attention of the Mozart Festival, the Pacific Light Opera, and other local performers anxious to bring entertainment to the many people who use the park every year.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Rotary in 1905, more than one million Rotarians in 162 countries are celebrating this special year by undertaking a "spectacular local project" that will serve their community for years to come. After meeting with the Dinosaur Caves Preservation Society, the Rotary Club of Pismo Beach/Five Cities has accepted that international challenge by their commitment to build the amphitheater, an important addition to this popular public park.

Building the amphitheater will cost more than $100,000. The Rotary, under the project direction of former Pismo city manager Suzanne Bragdon and Keith Slocum, deserves applause for raising almost three quarters of the costs in cash, material and labor donations since taking up the challenge. $95,000 has been pledged or collected to complete Phase I construction including the concrete and grass seating tiers, the stage, walkways, the electrical wiring, and a small part of the surrounding landscaping. We're all proud and grateful for what they've done.

Work on the amphitheater is scheduled to begin Monday, May 2nd. The Rotary would like to complete the entire project at the one time, but current donations are not enough to cover the additional cost of three facets of Phase II :

  • Building the stage shade structure
  • Completing the landscaping
  • Installing irrigation

Recognizing this is a community project, Rotary members are counting on the community to come forward to help make this marvelous project a reality. There are still plenty of ways you can help bring this wonderful gift to the community by donating money, time or materials.

What do you get for your donation?

The satisfaction of being part of an important city development. But wait. There's more:
